So, inducting someone into the Blades forces them from your service. Bugs affecting your ability to obtain new followers may be solved in this manner, though only three followers may be recruited. I don't utilize companions for much beyond being my pack mule, but upon beginning the Boethiah's Calling quest, I discovered that I can't get them to obey any god damn command given when I select 'do something'.
